Looking for a job can be overwhelming; you don’t have to make it harder on yourself by going through it alone. Many people, especially over the last year, have found themselves looking for a new opportunity starting with the standard LinkedIn search. One reason you may want to work with a recruiter could be to access jobs that are not saturated on traditional job boards, but that is not what will ultimately land you an offer. There are several benefits of working with a recruiter. I’ve broken down my top 3 below!
Help Craft Your Resume
Recruiters look at dozens of resumes a day and have been trained to view them from a hiring manager perspective. They can help you make appropriate updates based off their knowledge of the client or job description. I’ve always believed your resume should tell a story of your accomplishments and why you are a fit for the role you are applying for. A few months ago, I was working with a candidate who had applied countlessly through job boards to a position with one of our clients but never received an interview. After reviewing her resume, I made some recommendations on how she could more directly express her experience as it related to the job description. We submitted her profile and received an interview request a few days later! She now works at the company she had longed to work at for the past few years and her resume made all the difference. When a hiring manager sees a well-crafted, easy to read resume with specific responsibilities and accomplishments related to their job, it offers you the best opportunity to get an interview and hopefully the job too!
Interview Preparation
During a few of the recent interview preps I’ve done, a number of candidates have not interviewed anywhere from 1-10+ years! Going through the process can sometimes be nerve wracking. What questions will they ask? How will I know if I did (or didn’t 😳) do well? Utilizing a recruiter can help you feel confident by practicing, getting prepared for the interview, and knowing to ask the right questions. It is common that a recruiter can give you information about the people you will be meeting with, insight into their interviewing style, or even how to best present yourself.
A Lending Ear
Recruiters have talked to job seekers in many different situations and can many times offer some good advice. With transparency and trust built on both sides, they can help you get your questions answered and make the best decision for you based on your interests and motivators. While ultimately, we want it to be our job you choose, a good recruiter can help guide you to accept (or decline) a job for the right reasons.
