Panel Discussion: Diversity in Data Science
May 31 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
We invite you to join us Wednesday, May 31st from 6:30 – 8:30 pm to hear a panel of data scientists discuss diversity within the field, how things are improving, where work is still needed, and how all of this all relates to their personal backgrounds and career paths.
Metis is teaming up with the Chicago PyLadies for this event to talk about diversity in the data science job market with a panel of four data scientists coming from very diverse backgrounds.
Food, drinks, and networking included!
Chief Data Scientist at Metis
Deborah Berebichez is a physicist, data scientist and TV host. She has expertise in scientific research and advanced analysis and she has helped automate decision-making and uncover patterns in large amounts of data. Her passion lies in merging critical thinking skills with practical coding skills. She specializes in drawing connections between the approaches used in data science and the challenges organizations face. Deborah has a Ph.D. in physics from Stanford and completed two postdoctoral fellowships at Columbia University’s Applied Math and Physics Department and at NYU’s Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences. She is a frequent mentor of young women in STEM. Her work in science education and outreach has been recognized by the Discovery Channel, WSJ, Oprah, Dr. Oz, TED, DLD, WIRED, Ciudad de las Ideas and others.
Data Science Fellow Center for Data Science & Public Policy (University of Chicago)
Jane Zanzig is a researcher and data scientist at the Center for Data Science and Public Policy at the University of Chicago. She completed her B.S. in Mathematics and M.S. in Statistics in 2015 at the University of Washington, where she was awarded an AAUW fellowship for her dedication to increasing the representation of women and minorities in computational science. She is interested in applications of statistics and machine learning to problems with real-world impact and making STEM education accessible to everyone.
Data Analyst at GrubHub
Ahmed is a data analyst at GrubHub, where he combines two of his greatest passions in life, food and data. Prior to joining GrubHub, he was a student in the Metis Data Science Bootcamp in New York City. The skills he learned at Metis culminated in a final project which highlighted the temporal changes in hip hop lyrics over the last 35 years. Ahmed loves going to meetups and lightning talks in his spare time—and is always looking for recommendations!
Data Visualization Team Lead and Data Engineer at Jellyvision
MJ began her data science adventures began back in the early 2000s when “data scientist” meant “researcher who struggles with R”. She struggled a lot with R. Around 2011, she found her way out of linguistics and into software development, where she began helping marketers make sense of the social media landscape. A few clustering models and dashboards later, she spends her days at Jellyvision trying to automate relevant and compelling ways of presenting data. It’s a lot of fun.
