Intro to Python: From ‘Hello World’ to Basic Scientific Computing
July 26 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Please sign-in at the registration area at the entrance. Thank you!
Attendance will be capped at 30 people. Please RSVP early!
The event will be livestreamed here.
Join Metis instructor Zach Miller for his tutorial on Python, one of the most common and flexible coding languages in use today.
In this tutorial, we’ll introduce some of the basic Python structures and learn how to work with them in a practical, hands-on way. The goal: take an attendee from someone who’s never coded before, to someone who can write useful programs and make use of Python’s many built in tools. We’ll also introduce some excellent coding tools for Python, such as Jupyter Notebooks and the Numpy library.
To the event, please bring the following:
• Laptop with charger
• Set up Jupyter Notebooks in advance (continuum.io/downloads)
• Positive attitude
Zach is currently an instructor at Metis Chicago. He has spent the last eight years collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data from particle accelerators all over the United States, putting to use his PhD in nuclear physics. He’s helped pioneer statistical analysis, simulation, and data collection techniques to make measurements from hundreds of terabytes of physics data. During these efforts, Zach has worked with Los Alamos National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University of Kentucky Accelerator Lab, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. His passion is combining technical and programming skills with the educational chops he developed as a professor in order to create an intuitive, hands-on learning experience. In his free time, Zach plays numerous instruments, climbs rocks, and eats green chiles.
