Get Your Point Across: the Art of Choosing the Right Visualization for your Data

November 9, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us on November 9 to hear Datascope Analytics’ Data Scientists Jess Freaner and Mollie Pettit talk about effectively using data visualization.

Doors open at 6pm and the talks will start at 6:30pm. Light refreshments will be available, and there will be time for attendees to chat with each other and with the speakers.

About the talk:

Why does one decide to visualize data? And once they have decided to visualize their data, how do they know the best way to tell their story? To answer these questions, this talk will focus on the iterative design process, visualization fundamentals, and storytelling techniques. We will then anchor these principles in effective visualization examples.

Of particular importance is the ability and willingness to refine and redefine your objectives as you determine the right visualization for you (or your client/audience). This talk will walk through a Datascope client case study in order to convey the importance of a flexible and collaborative process when approaching data visualization problems in order to deliver the best end result.

You will walk away armed with helpful visualization techniques and an understanding of the iterative design process.

About the speakers:

Jess Freaner is a Data Scientist at Datascope Analytics. Before joining Datascope, Jess was a data scientist consultant with IBM Advanced Analytics and Watson Experience where she was part of the ideation and execution of advanced analytics engagements for global Fortune 500 clients across industries. After receiving her BA in Psychology from New York University, she taught herself to code COBOL and worked more than four years in trade finance supporting an international client base. Outside of Datascope, Jess loves to tinker and create, whether that means whipping up something new in the kitchen, DIY-ing a costume or getting down and dirty with her latest home improvement project. Find her on Twitter @jessfreaner

Mollie Pettit is a Data Scientist at Datascope Analytics. Before joining Datascope, Mollie worked as a scientific researcher at Stanford University (where she published a scientific paper in Environmental and Engineering Geoscience) and as a petrophysicist in Abu Dhabi. Mollie has BS degrees in Mathematics and Geology from WVU and a MS in geology from Stanford University. When Mollie is not being a technical nerd, she likes dancing as much as possible (lindy hop, tap, salsa, etc.), going to plays, baking, listening to educational podcasts, and working towards completing her goal of watching all things Trek.
