When to Take the Leap from PE to EE

The graduation from Professional Edition (PE) to Enterprise Edition (EE) may be intimidating. Usually, our clients experience sticker shock when trying to decide whether to upgrade. Additionally, it can be overwhelming understanding how the upgraded features would apply to your organization.

For most growing clients, Solving IT Edge has found this edition transition isn’t a matter of if you should transition, but rather when you should transition. Here are some key features that may indicate it’s time to make the switch.

Automation

You’d like to introduce more automation into your org, but you’ve hit the limit of 5 Process Builders. Moving to EE unlocks unlimited Process Builders and Workflow Rules which are unavailable in PE.

Data Importing or Integration

You have larger, more complex data sets from other systems that either need to be migrated into Salesforce or integrated on a regular basis. While PE allows you to take advantage of the Import Wizard in Salesforce, it has limitations that can prevent loading more complex datasets into your org. PE does not come standard with API access which means connecting with backend systems such as your ERP and invoicing system may not be possible. With that being said, it is possible to add-on API access per user per month, but given the overall value of EE licenses, there is typically more ROI by upgrading your license type.

Security and Profiles

As your organization expands its use of Salesforce, you may have more security requirements between personas. If you need more than 6 profiles, it’s time to upgrade from PE to EE.

Custom Code

While everything in PE is declarative configuration (point-and-click), your requirements will likely mature beyond standard functionality. As much as we encourage our customers to work with standard, out-of-the box functionality, there may be special requirements that justify a custom code solution using Apex – Salesforce’s development language. Requests such as custom interfaces, complex order of operations, custom validation, and advanced workflow automation justify the need for unlocking Apex through EE.

When you choose to upgrade your org, Salesforce makes the transition seamless. Without any intervention, you will be able to log in with more features unlocked. If you are a quickly growing business looking to rely more on your CRM as a true “one stop shop,” consider adding to your Salesforce roadmap an upgrade to EE. This post summarizes the high-level conversations we have with clients. If you’re running on PE and experience these limitations, our team of expert consultants would be happy to answer any questions. Drop us a note at Possibilities@Solvingit.com.
